Surfacing and waterproofing products for car parks by application method

There are two common methods for the application of surfacing and waterproofing products for car park surfaces; hot applied and liquid applied - also known as applied. The methods used are product specific but frequently the project particulars mean that both application methods may be used to create an effective and lasting solution that protects the concrete car park deck and steel structure from chemical, mechanical and thermal stresses.

Cold applied products for surfacing and waterproofing car parks

Two-component (PMMA) is a cold applied liquid coating ideally suited for car park specification. The resulting surface is a strong and hard wearing surface that is resistant to the heavy loads vehicular traffic imposes on it. It is also temperature stable, penetration resistant and offers lasting protection from water ingress. The fast curing and wet-on-wet application result in rapid installation that can be completed in poor weather conditions and allows foot traffic soon after. This is ideal for commercial car park refurbishment as these often have strict deadlines to minimise operational disruption and revenue losses.

What are the benefits of cold applied car park surfacing and waterproofing products?

  • Rapid installation can be completed in poor weather conditions
  • Fast curing time and wet on wet application makes the surface trafficable soon after installation
  • Strong, hard-wearing surface
  • Lasting protection from water ingress

Hot applied products for surfacing and waterproofing car parks

Mastic asphalt is a hot applied product that has been used in the industry for over 50 years and is popular due to its durability and reliability. Modern formulated mastic asphalt consists of polymer modified bitumen and graded limestone fine aggregate for increased mechanical properties and improved performance. It can be used as a robust, seamless waterproofing and surfacing for car parks to protect the deck from a variety of stress factors. Formulated mastic asphalt can be delivered in bulk at a temperature that allows for immediate installation and helps with quality control. For detailing work, it is often preferred to have blocks delivered that can be re-melted on site.

What are the benefits of hot applied car park surfacing and waterproofing products?

  • Bulk delivery of installation ready material for quality control
  • Detailing works can be completed separately using only the quantities required by re-melting blocks of formulated mastic asphalt on site
  • Durable and robust surface
  • Seamless waterproof top layer
