Cheshire Street, London – IKO Polimar

Project description

Cheshire Street in the East End of London is a mixed housing development for both private and public sectors. This new build project required absolute quality of waterproofing that would provide long term protection for the building.

The project had strict schedules which meant that minimal disruption to the surrounding areas was essential. A waterproofing system was required that would meet the requirements from both the public and private sectors as well as provide a contemporary, aesthetically pleasing finish.

IKO PLC’s approved installers of the IKO Polimar liquid applied roofing system, Avonside Flat Roofing, were able to deliver the highest level of installation ensuring that the design challenges were met, including a number of balconies, all whilst busy city life was carrying on around the site.

Solution

The IKO Polimar EC/UV system was selected to waterproof all the roof and balcony areas in the building. The installation of the main waterproofing was carried out early in the construction phase to allow the main concrete slabs to be waterproofed and enable the project to continue with internal finishes.

The roof was then water tested prior to the installation of an inverted insulation system with slabs and ballast to the top surface. Choosing to use a liquid applied waterproofing system brought the additional benefit of minimal disruption to building users and the general public plus substantial reduction in waste disposal requirements.

Installation

This project benefited from using a totally cold applied, flame free liquid system which was rapid, clean and sustainable. As there were no requirements for hot bitumen or gas bottles on site, this reduced the CO² and noise emissions which meant reduced impact on the environment.

Avonside Flat Roofing commented: “The use of the IKO Polimar liquid applied roofing system allows the project to meet with the tight programme and also allowed all roof areas to be used for storage on a site which had little, or in places, no storage area. The system was used because of its versatility, toughness and ease of application.

“The use of trained operatives ensured a high level of workmanship and regular inspections by IKO PLC proved great comfort to the client. The adaptability enabled us to complete balconies after the main work had been completed, with the aid of mechanical equipment.”

The IKO Polimar EC/UV liquid applied roofing system has received a European Technical Approval – certificate number ETA-05/0193.
