Mastic asphalt flooring and screed solutions
Systems designed for project sequencing efficiency and proven stability
IKO’s mastic asphalt flooring and screed systems provide hot-applied solutions for internal floors, roofs, podiums, and external walkways. These systems are designed for quick cooling and have a documented track record of use across commercial, industrial, and refurbishment projects.
Their installation characteristics can support efficient site sequencing and enable timely access for subsequent trades, while long-term performance is supported by relevant test data and project evidence.
Why choose mastic asphalt?
Mastic asphalt has supported UK construction for decades, offering flooring and screeding solutions for projects that require long-term performance and precision. Applied hot, it forms a seamless, voidless surface that is dense and ready for follow on trades as soon as it cools.
Its zero-water content is a key advantage. Because it requires no potable water for mixing or curing, mastic asphalt helps reduce on-site resource use and avoid the moisture-related delays and rework risks associated with cementitious screeds. This supports more predictable programmes and helps minimise unnecessary waste.
These attributes make mastic asphalt a practical choice for reliable flooring and screeding applications across a wide range of environments.
Mastic asphalt flooring
Surfaces for commercial, industrial, and public environments
Mastic asphalt flooring provides a smooth finish suitable for a variety of settings, from schools and offices to heavy-duty industrial areas. It can be installed as a final wearing surface or used beneath tiles, carpets and other finishes.
Externally, it is also used for paving, exposed decks, walkways, terraces, and areas subject to foot or light vehicular traffic.
A single-coat application creates the required thickness for most projects; where used as an underlay, two coats may be required. A range of finishes is possible, including polished and matt surfaces or decorative options featuring exposed aggregate.
Applications
- Internal commercial floors
- Retail, education, and healthcare environments
- Industrial floors with mechanical traffic
- Walkways, terraces, and balconies
- Exposed and semi-exposed parking decks
- Areas requiring slip-resistant finishes
Benefits of mastic asphalt flooring
- Smooth, hard-wearing, long-lasting surface (manufactured in accordance with BS 6925:1988 Type F 1076/2/11/B)
- Wide range of finish options, including decorative and textured; slip resistance classifications available on request
- Can function as a damp proof layer when specified as part of an IKO system; refer to IKO technical guidance
- Manufactured by a Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) member
Mastic asphalt screed systems
Stable, voidless substrates for levelling and drainage falls
IKO’s flooring and screeding systems provide water-free solutions for creating stable substrates across internal floors, external walkways, and terrace areas. Designed to support accurate levelling and drainage falls (in line with BS6229:2025), they offer an alternative to traditional wet screeds.
Because these systems are hot applied and contain no water, they require little curing time. Once cooled, they can be accessed or overlaid immediately, helping reduce downtime for follow-on trades and supporting consistent progress even in colder conditions.
Offering voidless application, precise thickness control and reduced material requirements, IKO’s mastic asphalt screed systems are suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects.
Applications
- Levelling uneven floors and flat roofs
- Creating drainage falls on roofs, podiums, and terraces
- Bases for internal flooring systems
- Walkways, balconies, and external platforms
- New build and refurbishment projects
Benefits of mastic asphalt screeds
- Hot-applied and water-free for fast curing time
- Early access once cooled, supporting progress on site
- Voidless, stable surface suitable for waterproofing and floor finishes
- Suitable for forming accurate drainage falls
- Can be installed at reduced thicknesses to support lightweight build-ups
- Compatible with a wide range of surfacing and waterproofing systems
- As the manufacturer, IKO is proud to be a member of the Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC)
IKO Permascreed LI – Low-carbon, fast-cooling screed
IKO Permascreed LI delivers up to 38% lower upfront embodied carbon compared to previous IKO Permascreed L and M systems, with a reduction in Global Warming Potential of up to 73.44 kg CO₂e per tonne (A1–A3), verified through third party EPD data.
It can be layered to create drainage falls, level uneven areas, and provide a stable base for the chosen waterproofing or surfacing system. Once cooled, within one day when installed in line with the IKO specification, it is ready for foot traffic and subsequent installation stages.
Key features
- Lower embodied carbon, supporting customer sustainability objectives
- Third-party verified EPD and GWP data
- Zero water content and little curing, avoiding cold-weather delays
- Fast cooling enables early access
- Suitable for levelling and drainage falls
- Compatible with a wide range of waterproofing systems
