What are the benefits of Mastic Asphalt for car park waterproofing?

Mastic Asphalt is a traditional and proven waterproofing solution for multi-storey car parks and car parking decks. Its recognised longevity more than justifies its consideration for car parking applications where the waterproofing is put under significant stress.

Whether part of an insulated rooftop parking deck, an intermediate level of a multi-storey car park, or an access ramp, the waterproofing finish is directly exposed to the elements and vehicle movements.

The development of Polymer Modified Mastic Asphalt has retained the traditional appeal while improving temperature stability, installation and even colour choice.

How do modern Mastic Asphalt waterproofing solutions differ?

Concrete car parking structures have always been well-protected by Mastic Asphalt. It provides a seamless, totally waterproof layer, which can be trafficked within a few hours – there is no moisture, and therefore no lengthy curing period.

Structures are protected from both direct rainfall, and indirect moisture exposure as people and vehicles move rainwater from one area to another.

Polymer Modified Mastic Asphalt is a factory-produced material, with formulations mixed in controlled conditions and delivered to site ready to install.

Manufacturers can offer different grades of material suited to the anticipated design loads of different areas of the building, safe in the knowledge that consistent performance will be achieved throughout each area of application.

The waterproofing for an access ramp or internal parking level can be different to decks for cars and light commercial vehicles, or decks for heavy good vehicles.

For specifiers and contractors alike, knowing the correct asphalt grade has been delivered to site and installed across different areas gives confidence that in-service performance will match the design intent, and provides cost certainty.

What other advantages does polymer modified Mastic Asphalt offer?

Polymer modified Mastic Asphalt can be coated with different colours, giving a range of options to improve car park design, distinguish different types of parking space and help car park users.

And since 2008, the Mastic Asphalt industry as a whole has met the CarbonZero standard, working collectively to reduce the environmental impact of its actions. IKO is proud to work with CO2balance to offset carbon emissions from Mastic Asphalt production.

IKO Permapark is a polymer modified Mastic Asphalt waterproofing system for vehicle decks, access ramps and walkways. For guidance on the correct IKO Permapark specification for different grades of vehicle traffic, download our IKO Permapark Design Guide.
