Piccadilly, London - IKO pacopatch

Brief

One of the busiest traffic hotspots and most popular tourist locations in London, Piccadilly is located between Hyde Park Corner and Piccadilly Circus. Home to the Capital’s iconic advertising screens, the area is a constant hive of bustling activity, with the road network being used by thousands of vehicles every single day.

At the start of 2024, Westminster City Council implemented an extensive roadworks project, which involved resurfacing the roads in Piccadilly and conducting ironwork reinforcements to the carriageway.

Triplex Industrial Contractors were tasked with carrying out the reinforcement work while FM Conway delivered the resurfacing element of this major refurbishment project.

Challenges

Implementing such an extensive programme of work within a central inner city location without causing too much disruption to drivers, tourists, workers and residents presented multiple challenges.

Solution

The work was meticulously planned and carried out in phases to make sure road closures were kept to an absolute minimum and unnecessary disruption was avoided. As a result, the project was completed over 14 shifts, which involved daytime road closures.

“We specified IKO Pacopatch for this project because of the high quality results it delivers when it is installed correctly. This includes proven durability and lifecycle savings, which enables us to futureproof our work and all of the projects we work on, including Piccadilly,” explains Oliver Springall, General Manager at Triplex Industrial Contractors.

Solution (continued)

Planned road closures enabled the team to progress the work within the required timescales while strategically-placed barriers and pedestrian marshals were used to manage the pedestrian traffic. This ensured everybody – the general public and work teams – remained safe at all times. Risk assessments were also carried out at every stage to identify and mitigate potential hazards and access points and walkways were created to enable future maintenance work to be carried out safely.

Careful planning played a fundamental part in not just making sure the project was completed on time, but guaranteeing every aspect of the installation process was delivered to the highest standard.

Triplex Industrial Contractors’ dedicated IKO Pacopatch supervisor managed the project and co-ordinated the reinforcement work with the road closures. They also made sure the required plant and materials were on-site when required.

“From precisely measuring the reinstatements to determining the depths of every unit, every single detail was meticulously executed to perfection, right down to the last millimetre,” explains Oliver.

“This commitment to precision not only guarantees quality, but ensures longevity. The reinforcements will face rigorous testing over the coming years, and this attention to detail and specifying the right products, is paramount to delivering an overall solution that is capable of withstanding the challenges of busy urban environments.”
