Project Overview
Sainsbury’s Lee Green is a busy supermarket in south-east London, where the car park plays an essential role in the day-to-day running of the store. The project involved refurbishing approximately 3,600m² of deck area while keeping the site operational for customers, staff and deliveries throughout the works.
Working with main contractor KSD Group, Blackrock Asphalt installed the IKO Permapark car park waterproofing system to provide a renewed, hard-wearing and fully trafficable surface suited to a live retail environment.
Challenges
Keeping the store open throughout the programme was the defining challenge. Access had to be maintained across the car park at all times, so each working area needed careful control to avoid disrupting customer movement, deliveries and the wider operation of the site.
This required disciplined phasing and active traffic management, including temporary traffic light systems to manage vehicle and pedestrian routes safely. Under those conditions, the team also needed to maintain the continuity and quality of the waterproofing installation from one phase to the next.
Solution
A phased delivery strategy allowed the refurbishment to move forward in controlled sections while keeping the wider car park in use. Each phase was planned to maintain safe access, protect completed areas and give the IKO Permapark car park waterproofing system the continuity it needed across the deck.
The specified build-up comprised a nominal 10mm single-coat IKO Permapark waterproofing layer on IKO glass fibre tissue, finished with a nominal 30mm IKO Permapark paving layer. Together, this created a fully bonded waterproofing solution with a trafficable wearing surface designed for sustained vehicular use.
Through careful sequencing and close coordination between KSD Group, Blackrock Asphalt and the wider project team, the refurbishment was completed while allowing the supermarket to continue trading throughout the programme.
