Working in partnership with construction firm, GMG Contractors, IKO has helped to boost the thermal and waterproofing performance of Lanthorn Community Centre in West Lothian. Located in the Dedridge area of Livingston, this large facility hosts a wide range of local events and adjoins a church building.

Glasgow-based GMG Contractors was approached by West Lothian Council to help repair the flat roof of the community centre. The project quickly evolved to include the adjoining church, including covering the existing walls of the entire building with an insulated wall render system.

IKO and GMG Contractors joined forces to respond to the Council’s Public Contract Notice for the work, and was successful in winning the tender. This was awarded on a points-based score system which required both IKO and GMG Contractors to meet strict performance criteria.

Solutions

The project involved replacing the existing rooflights, then the IKO Mach One system was installed on the community centre’s low-level roof, which included tapered insulation to drain water from the roofs via existing internal drainage.

IKO Mach One is a single layer roofing system which can be mechanically fastened, ballasted or bonded with polyurethane adhesive. The membrane is produced using a polyester, glass fibre composite reinforcement with exceptional mechanical strength and dimensional stability.

The same system was used for the church and the existing waterproofing system was overlaid with IKO enertherm MG. Clad on both sides with a perforated glass membrane, the MG board has been designed for flame-free applications.

Special properties within the system created moisture and mould resistance, as well as dimensional stability, ensuring a long service life and strong energy performance.

To help minimise the project’s impact on the environment, IKO took core samples from the lower level roof enabling around 80 per cent of the existing material to be used for overlay, significantly reducing the need for skip lorries.

“This was a challenging project that was carried out in a live environment and monitored daily by the council’s health and safety officers.

“To manage the safe removal of the existing rooflights, we had to build scaffold from the inside and use a net to prevent any debris from falling. The lower level roof also had to be stripped back by a specialist company as asbestos was found.

“Despite these difficulties, our vast experience of installing IKO systems and insulated wall render ensured this project was completed to the highest standards.”
