Kingswood Golf Club, Surrey – IKOslate
The issue
When starting to plan the development of a new 18 bedroomed lodge at Kingswood Golf Course, the management team were concerned about its proximity to the 18th hole and the perennial damage that had been caused over time to the existing slate roofs of the club house from golf balls.
They wanted a more robust, sustainable solution for the roof of The Lodge. The Lodge is the first building visitors see on entering the site and therefore needed to be aesthetically pleasing.
The solution
Independent Architects specified IKOslate tile for their inherent strength, which would reduce the need for replacement tiles when golf balls hit the roof in future.
IKOslate also met the local planning criteria for a tile that matched the appearance of the surrounding buildings. The prominent pitched roofs on all sides of The Lodge and individual dormer windows for guest rooms made the roof design a dominant and attractive element of the architectural solution.
IKOslate tiles, manufactured from mineral reinforced, 99% recycled and re-engineered materials, have the same aesthetic qualities as slate because they are made in the same moulds but are 80% lighter, which makes transporting to and around site much easier.
Prior to installing the slates, an eaves protection system was fixed followed by a breather membrane, which was laid along the rafters. The IKOslate was then nailed to the slate battens. Unlike natural slate, IKOslate can be installed using power tools.
Tiles can be nailed down using a hammer or nail gun and they can be cut with a hacksaw. Markers on each tile indicate where the exposure lap should be. Local contractor P J Gardner felt that IKOslate was easier to use in every way and quicker to install than traditional slate. The job was completed in just 4 weeks from start to finish.
