Cheswick Green Primary School, Solihull – IKO Mach Two
Background
IKO PLC has provided 2,000m² of roofing material for a primary school in Solihull. Cheswick Green Primary School’s existing building was in need of refurbishment as its roof was severely failing.
The head teacher, Carol Mason, had a vision of how she wanted the school to be and worked in conjunction with architects Ridge and Partners LLP to make this happen. A new build area was also commissioned.
Solutions
IKO’s approved installing contractor Monarch Roofing of Stourbridge, undertook the works on behalf of the local education authority, and quickly identified the challenges facing the project.
The school had to remain fully operational throughout the works, with all the accompanying health and safety issues this posed. IKO Mach One (single layer system) was chosen as a quick waterproofing system to install, as its flame-free / cold-applied installation would minimise disruption to the day to day running of the school.
IKO Systems Self-Adhesive metal lined vapour control layer was fully adhered to the decking using a specialist bonding agent and to this IKO enertherm MG PIR Insulation was bonded using IKOpro PU Insulation Adhesive.
The IKO enertherm MG PIR insulation was incorporated in a bid to provide a reduction in CO² emissions in comparison to the existing system, and as a result the new roofing system successfully achieved a revised U-value of 0.18W/m²K. This full thermal upgrade has proved that the school has already benefited from reduced heating costs.
The new roof is an excellent example of how bituminous membranes, along with good design and intelligent use of insulation, can deliver a problem-free roof for schools. The roof was installed quickly and efficiently, and the running of the school was not affected during the work. A 20 year single point guarantee was issued.
