Culham Science Centre – IKO ULTRA Gold 20
Amber and IKO worked together to deliver a sensitive scheme for a new client. This project was located at the Culham Science Centre, the UK Government’s research facility for Fusion Energy.
Delivered by their in-house roofing teams, Amber installed new IKO roof coverings to circa 5,500m2 comprising several roof areas.
The works also comprised of the installation of 12 new rooflights, a new freestanding guardrail, and new cappings. Amber worked closely with IKO to ensure the works were completed on time, on budget, and to an outstanding standard.
ISSUES IDENTIFIED
Height – providing safe access and a place of work on a roof 35 metres high.
Weather – the roof would be open and exposed to extreme weather conditions due to height and location.
Stripping asphalt, insulation, paving slabs, and Lytag and getting it safely to the ground.
The concrete deck was poured in situ, concrete that was too rough to accept the weatherproofing needed to be scarified before installation.
The cavity trays were too low.
The site is a torch-free zone.
SOLUTION
Scaffolding with a roof and side sheeting was erected to protect the site and allow work to continue despite weather conditions.
External access – a material hoist was installed to get people and materials to the roof for the installers. It also helped protect residents who were shielding due to COVID-19.
Encapsulated the parapet having established that the trays directed water out of the building fabric.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide shielding from COVID-19.
Tight budget and timescale.
Strict supply chain requirements.
