Brunswick Car Park, Scarborough – IKO Permapark

Project description

Located in the heart of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Brunswick Shopping Centre offers shoppers over 30 shops under one roof. The shopping centre has an annual footfall of approximately 7 million people and offers on-site car parking split over two levels.

The asphalt surfacing, which was the original covering, had come to the end of its serviceable life. The surface showed significant signs of wear and tear and had various repairs which had been undertaken using various systems, some of which had a detrimental effect on the asphalt.

Various options were considered, including overlaying the asphalt but none of the solutions could compete with the proven track record, durability, compatibility and market leading warranty offered by IKO and its Permapark System.

Solution and installation

IKO Permapark, a mastic asphalt waterproofing and surfacing system for elevated vehicle decks, was specified as the main covering for the car park which provided long-term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation.

For detailing works, IKO Polimar EC/UV Cold Applied Liquid System was used. Its high performance polyurethane resins provided extra durability and puncture resistance. Brush and roller applied application made the system ideal for the areas of limited access.

As well as its solvent-free application, IKO Permapark also provided excellent fire performance and 100% carbon neutral solution. Like for like replacement of the surfacing was carefully planned in conjunction with NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd.

Maintaining as much functionality of the car park as possible to minimise revenue impact, while allowing works to progress was a significant challenge of the project. A phased approach was adopted which ensured that total closure periods of the car park were minimised to less than a quarter of the overall project.

After a 21 weeks of refurbishment programme, the car park fully opened to the public on the 19th October 2018.
