Parsons Green Primary School, Edinburgh – IKO Polimar

Project description

City of Edinburgh Council required a new roof for one of its local authority primary schools, Parsons Green. Built in 1961, the school had a copper pitched roof which was in need of replacement, and an upgrade to the insulation of the building was also required.

The council also required a 20 year single point insurance-backed guarantee and a reputable installing roof contractor.

As the school is located in a conservation area, it was vital that the replacement roof was a similar colour to the existing, copper green one. Other challenges were that there were to be no hot works on the roof and also that the majority of the works were to be carried out in school holidays. Budgetary constraints were also a factor to consider.

IKO PLC liaised with installing roofing contractors Braedale Roofing to refine the specification to meet the client’s requirements. In order to replicate the look of the existing roof, it was decided to use IKO Polimar UV cold-applied liquid waterproofing in copper green.

IKO Single Ply standing seams also painted in copper green IKO Polimar UV were applied to the roof in order to create a similar profile.

IKO Polimar EC is a high performance, high build polyurethane embedment coat. It incorporates moisture triggered curing technology that forms the base layer of the IKO Polimar EC/UV system.

Polimar UV is a stable top coat which once applied, the cured membrane forms a seamless durable waterproof barrier which provides excellent thermal and UV stability for all climatic conditions.

The school also had a flat roof area of approximately 400m² in need of replacement. IKO’s single layer Mach One system was chosen as a quick waterproofing system to install, as its flame-free / cold-applied installation would minimise any disruption to the running of the school.

This cost-effective combination of IKO systems ensured that all the refurbished roofs could be covered by one guarantee. A 20 year single point guarantee was therefore issued.
