Bede Primary School & Community Centre, Gateshead – IKO Mach Two

Background

Gateshead Council is committed to raising educational standards and achievement throughout the Borough. There have been tremendous improvements made over the last few years and they want to continue this process by creating inspirational 21st century learning environments in all their schools.

The roof on Bede Primary School and Community Centre in Gateshead was in great need of repair. Installing roofing contractors Hodgson and Allon liaised with IKO to refine the specification to meet the client’s requirements.

This included a full strip and re-cover with a flame free system to carry a 20 year guarantee. IKO chose an IKO Mach One Single Layer Bituminous System incorporating a site specific cut-to-fall system. This project was a complex roof replacement system with multi-trades required for specialist operations.

For the higher level roofs, the existing copper sheeting was stripped and 18mm w.b.p. plywood to the sides, gable ends, and sloping areas was fitted and then re-covered with a copper coloured vertical and sloping single ply system. A standing seam detail was fitted to give a realistic copper effect.

All internal outlets were replaced with 40 refurbishment outlets. They had to be carefully fitted internally from scaffold towers where ceiling tiles had to be removed and refitted following a water test.

The windows were removed and replaced with new double glazed windows with UPVC. frames and black coloured shiplap cladding to match the IKO Mach One Cap Sheet.

IKO Mach One Membrane is a robust single layer system which can be mechanically fixed, ballasted or bonded with polyurethane adhesive. IKO Mach One offers a fast, clean and flame free solution.
