Women in Manufacturing: Meet Angelika Wrobel

As we continue to champion Women in Manufacturing, we caught up with Angelika Wrobel, Team Leader at our Clay Cross manufacturing site, about her career so far and the positive and inclusive culture at IKO PLC.

What inspired you to pursue a career in manufacturing?

My journey into manufacturing began unexpectedly. After leaving school, I needed a job, and through an agency and some help from my ex-boyfriend, I landed a role in a food production factory.

What started as simply a job became the foundation for a career. I learned how to read technical drawings, operate machinery, and realised that I had a real talent for this work. Over time, I discovered that manufacturing wasn’t just where I started, it’s where I truly belong.

Can you share your journey to becoming a Team Leader?

I began at IKO as a Machine Operator, where I was trained on how to run the equipment. When our Team Leader left, there was a gap and I naturally stepped in. I took on the responsibilities without being asked because I cared about my team and the work we do.

When the Team Leader role was advertised, I applied with confidence, knowing I was already fulfilling the role. I had a proper interview, was successful, and officially took on the position. It was a proud moment recognising the value of initiative and hard work.

What does a typical day on the shop floor look like for you?

My day starts with a handover and a conversation with the Manager to align on schedules and updates. I support the team on the shop floor, making sure everyone gets their breaks and that the operation runs smoothly.

From checking that materials are ready to ensuring programmes are correctly uploaded, it’s all about being proactive, present, and making sure the team has what they need to succeed.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your role?

Leading my team is incredibly rewarding. We have a great connection, we support each other, communicate well, and even socialise outside of work. Knowing that I can contribute to their development and well-being is one of the best parts of what I do.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest lessons has been learning to be assertive. Working in a male-dominated environment meant finding my voice and standing confidently in it.

I’ve always been confident, but leadership called for a new level of strength, and I rose to it. I’ve had no opposition from my colleagues, just support, which shows how positive and inclusive our environment can be.

How would you describe the culture at IKO?

IKO has a culture where people genuinely support each other. While there are naturally stressful days, especially when workloads are high or machines go down, the general atmosphere is positive. We face challenges together, and that makes all the difference.

Do you feel supported as a woman in a leadership role here?

Absolutely. I’ve always received the support I’ve needed. That backing has helped me to grow and thrive in my role.

What impact do you think having more women in leadership roles has on the business?

Having more women in leadership helps create a more balanced, inclusive workplace. It brings different perspectives, encourages collaboration, and sets a powerful example for future generations of female leaders.

What advice would you give to someone who’s nervous about working in a male-dominated environment?

Don’t be! In my experience, working with men often means fewer dramas and a lot of camaraderie. I’ve been welcomed, treated with respect, and even invited to a stag do! That says it all. Take the leap; you won’t regret it.

How has this role helped you grow personally and professionally?

Personally, I’ve become more confident and self-assured. I’ve proved to myself and others that I’m more than capable. I’ve handled challenges, resolved issues, and continued moving forward.

Professionally, my machine operating skills have grown, and I’m currently working on my NVQ Level 3, which has deepened my understanding of the role and opened doors for further development.

What makes you want to continue working at IKO?

There are plenty of opportunities to grow and progress, and I’m always learning. But above all, it’s the people I work with, my team, who make coming to work every day worthwhile.

What are the best parts of working at IKO?

The best part is the sense of community. We support each other, work hard, and share success together.

What would you say to other women considering a career in manufacturing?

Go for it! Manufacturing offers so much more than people realise. It’s a place where you can build a solid career, gain valuable skills, and become part of a strong, supportive team. Just do it, you won’t look back.
