Protecting heritage buildings for the future with mastic asphalt

Heritage and listed buildings demand the highest-quality construction materials to ensure they are protected for future generations, while respecting their unique legacy. These historical buildings draw in millions of visitors from across the globe, contributing to important educational, economic and social benefits.

Mastic asphalt has been a tried, tested and trusted choice in the roofing industry for centuries. Thanks to its exceptional durability, it provides a long and robust design life that meets growing sustainable demands.

Composed primarily of bitumen, limestone filler and aggregate, mastic asphalt is applied in a molten state, which allows it to be moulded to fit any shape, contour or detail, creating a seamless, monolithic finish.

Its appealing aesthetic, coupled with its long-term durability, makes mastic asphalt the go-to choice for protecting the UK’s most historically significant buildings – frequently specified by the National Trust and English Heritage, among others.

We’re proud that IKO’s mastic asphalt solutions have been specified by high-profile projects, including Battersea Power Station, the Tower of London, Westminster Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral.

IKO in action: Keble College

Keble College, one of the largest and most prestigious colleges at the University of Oxford, sought to renovate the roof of its student bar. To ensure aesthetic continuity, the college opted to use mastic asphalt, which is consistent with the material used on the roof previously.

Find out how the asphalt was painted with white solar paint to reflect sunlight onto the higher-level windows by reading our case study.

The project’s environmental credentials were also enhanced through the implementation of a green roof, whilst maintaining the use of traditional mastic asphalt.

Building a sustainable future: IKO’s ESG strategy

At IKO, we’re committed to ensuring the longevity of historic buildings, while following Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles on sustainable practices, transparency and accountability.
