Guildford Borough Council Depot - Multi-Storey Car Park

Project Overview

Guildford Borough Council’s new depot development on the edge of Slyfield Industrial Estate was created to bring several operational services together in one location, including waste collection, street cleaning, parks and green spaces, housing repairs and supporting teams.

As part of that wider scheme, a new multi-storey car park was required to provide day-to-day parking for service vehicles, staff and visitors at a busy operational site.

The works covered 1,700m² across the top deck and access ramp, where the waterproofing system had to provide long-term durability, effective drainage and a trafficable finish suited to regular vehicular use.

Challenges

The main challenge was drainage. Part of the deck had been constructed without falls, so a new 1:60 falls strategy had to be created while working with 16 fixed vertical gully outlets.

That required 128 IKO Permascreed crickets to be formed accurately so water could be directed where it needed to go.

Access added another layer of complexity. A 2.10m height restriction limited plant and material movement to the top deck, while the inclusion of a thermal movement joint running in two directions, together with joint sealant within the paving grade, demanded careful sequencing and detailing throughout.

Solution

IKO Permascreed H was used to create the required falls and form the crickets needed to direct water to the 16 vertical outlets. That gave the team a practical way to resolve the drainage issue without compromising the finished performance of the deck.

Once the falls strategy had been established, the IKO Permapark waterproofing system was installed to the top deck and access ramp, providing the specified waterproofing and paving build-up for traffic.

Careful management of access, sequencing and movement joint detailing helped the team complete a durable, fully waterproofed deck designed to withstand regular vehicular use as part of a busy operational depot.
