Mossfield Primary School, Manchester - IKO metatech cold applied liquid system

Project Overview

IKO, in partnership with Paramount Roofing Systems Limited, delivered a comprehensive school roof replacement and thermal upgrade for Mossfield Primary School in Manchester. The project aimed to enhance the building’s energy efficiency, improve weatherproofing and extend the lifespan of the roofing system, all while ensuring compliance with current Building Regulations.

The scope of project included the removal of the existing roof system, installation of a high-performance waterproofing solution and the incorporation of upgraded insulation to achieve the required thermal performance. A tapered thermal insulation board scheme was implemented to improve water dispersal and prevent ponding, ensuring effective drainage and long-term roof integrity.

Additionally, 32 old skylights were removed and replaced with new, energy-efficient units to enhance natural lighting and ventilation within the building.

All works were carried out in accordance with regulatory standards and client specifications, ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s operations while delivering a durable, long-term roofing solution.

Challenges

Working within a live school environment presented significant logistical difficulties, requiring strict site coordination to minimise disruption. The existing roof had multiple complex features, including differing roof levels, numerous penetrations for ventilation and the integration of 32 skylights, which required careful planning to maintain a continuous waterproofing system.

Health and safety was a primary concern throughout the project, particularly regarding the risk of falls from height and ensuring the safety of school staff and students. The challenge of working on an occupied school building required exceptional planning and communication to manage noise levels and ensure safe movement around the site.

Additionally, the existing roof had significant issues with water ponding, requiring a solution that would not only provide thermal improvements but also address this drainage problem effectively.

Solution

The IKO metatech PMMA cold applied liquid roofing system was selected due to its seamless application and ability to form around intricate details such as upstands, rooflight openings and ventilation units. This provided a fully bonded, durable waterproofing solution ideal for the complex roof structure.

Solution continued

An IKO enertherm MG tapered thermal insulation board scheme was designed to not only meet Building Regulations for thermal performance but also improve water dispersal and prevent ponding, addressing a significant issue on the existing roof. The comprehensive system included IKO Shield Plus Membrane, IKO Polyester fleece 110gsm, IKOpro Bonding Agent, IKO enertherm tapered insulation, IKO Systems SA VCL and IKOtrim L GRP Edge Trim.

To maintain site safety, full perimeter edge protection with independent handrails was installed around the entire roof, providing continuous fall protection for operatives working at height. Materials were safely transported to the roof level using motorised hoists positioned at a scaffold loading bay, reducing manual handling risks.

Quality control was maintained throughout the project, with weekly inspections by IKO representatives to ensure full compliance with product specifications. Each stage of the installation was documented with logged photographic evidence, providing a detailed record of progress, workmanship and detailing.

A phased implementation plan allowed critical works to proceed while mitigating weather-related delays. Pre-scheduled deliveries were arranged outside of peak school hours to avoid congestion and safety risks, while a secure site compound, including storage, welfare and offices, prevented unauthorised access and maintained site control.

Through effective planning, strong site management and clear communication with school representatives, the project was delivered on time, within budget and to a high standard of quality. The result is a high-performance, energy-efficient roofing system that ensures long-term durability and improved environmental performance for the school.
