IKO PLC is delighted to have won the award for ‘Best Large Scale Project’ at the recent National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) UK Roofing Awards held on 10 May in Central London. The prestigious awards recognise and reward the best roofing projects from across the country and competition is tough.
IKO was awarded the top prize after being judged by a panel of experts who weighed up the merits of each of the four shortlisted projects.
Stephen Mooney, Area Business Manager – Roofing Specification Division, attended the glittering ceremony. Speaking after the win, Stephen said: “We were really humbled to learn we were shortlisted so it’s fantastic to have won this award. It was a pleasure to work with Barclay Roofing on this project and we are delighted to have been recognised for ‘Best Large Scale Project.”
Paul Trelease, Managing Director of Barclay Roofing, added: “Given the challenges of the project we were delighted to deliver on time and in budget and are extremely pleased that it has been recognised in the UK Roofing Awards.”
“We were extremely impressed with the IKOslate which was particularly well suited for the application and the high levels of foot traffic which were necessary during the installation. The completed roof looks great and was completed without waste or breakage of any kind.”
IKO PLC worked with surveyor Faithful & Gould who chose an IKO pitched roofing solution of IKOslate to replace a 4000m2 roof which was badly in need of repair. The Abbey Hill Academy in Stockton-on-Tees helps young people aged 11 to 16 who have learning difficulties and disabilities; learn, grow, inspire, and achieve.
Local Stockton-on-Tees contractor Barclay Roofing won a competitive tender process to carry out the mammoth task. All works were carried out during the school holidays when the pupils were not at school so there was no disruption to their learning.
The solution IKO and Faithful & Gould arrived at involved removing all the existing cement slates and the felt system which had broken down and was causing condensation issues within the school building. IKO Rubershield Pro Breather Membrane was installed to help remove the condensation issues within the roofing structure.
The entire roof was then replaced using IKOslate, a polymer composite material made from 99% recycled material (including car parts) with greater robustness and durability than the fibre cement slates which had previously been used on the roof.
Full replacement of the ridge mounted rooflights was required as part of the contract and the extended lead-in for their manufacture and installation required large areas of the roof to be replaced before they were available.
Paul Trelease of Barclay Roofing commented: “I know of no other pitched roofing product which would withstand the levels of traffic that occurred without any form of damage.”
The new IKOslate roofing system was supplied with a 40-year guarantee so both pupils and staff can now enjoy a learning environment that is safe, warm, and dry for years to come.
