Mastic Asphalt car park system installed at Brunswick Shopping Centre

When the on-site car park which has more than 350 spaces split over two levels at Brunswick Shopping Centre in Scarborough reached the end of its serviceable life, 500 tonnes of IKO Permapark were used to rejuvenate the structure.

The Mastic Asphalt car park system was quick and easy to install and resulted in a durable and fatigue-resistant surface for visitors to the shopping centre to walk and drive on. Plus, the net carbon footprint of the project was entirely offset.

Replacing the old asphalt car park surface with Mastic Asphalt

The car parkā€™s old asphalt surfacing was original to the structure, and it had come to the end of its serviceable life. It showed significant signs of wear and tear and had been repaired several times over the years with a variety of different systems ā€“ some of which had a detrimental effect on the asphalt surface.

When it came time to rejuvenate the old car park, several options were considered, including overlaying the asphalt.

None of the solutions, however, could compete with the benefits of Mastic Asphalt, particularly the proven track record, durability, compatibility, and market-leading guarantee offered by IKO and its Permapark Mastic Asphalt car park system.

Installing Mastic Asphalt minimises car park disruption

The replacement of the old surfacing was carefully planned in conjunction with NRA Roofing and Flooring Services Ltd.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was the continued functionality of the car park, which was critical to minimise revenue impact for the shopping centre.

With this in mind, a phased approach was adopted, with one section of the car park being worked on at a time. This, along with IKO Permapark’s quick drying times, ensured that closure periods of the car park were minimised to less than a quarter of the overall project.

As well as the Mastic Asphalt, the car park project also made use of IKO Polimar EC/UV Cold Applied Liquid System for detailing work. IKO Polimarā€™s high-performance polyurethane resins provided extra durability and puncture resistance. Brush and roller application made the system ideal for areas with limited access.

After a 21-week refurbishment programme, the new Mastic Asphalt car park fully opened to the public on 19th October 2018.

Why was IKO Permapark Mastic Asphalt specified?

IKO Permapark is a polymer-modified Mastic Asphalt car park paving system, consisting of polymer-modified bitumen and graded limestone fine aggregate.

Designed to receive either 6mm or 10mm igneous aggregate, it is applied using traditional Mastic Asphalt techniques and suitable for elevated vehicle decks.

IKO Permapark was specified as the primary covering for the multi-storey car park at Brunswick Shopping Centre thanks to its:

  • Seamless waterproofing.
  • Long-term durability.
  • Excellent fatigue resistance.
  • High level of temperature stability.
  • Excellent fire performance.
  • Ease of installation.
  • Solvent-free application.
  • 20-year guarantee.

In terms of sustainability, IKO Permapark is easily recyclable, and the net carbon footprint of this project was entirely offset using internationally approved carbon credits.

These fund environmental and humanitarian work around the world, such as the African Energy Efficient Stove Project and the Ugandan Bore Hole Project.

IKOā€™s experts can provide a range of services, including design advice, site surveys and support, detailing advice, specification tools and calculators.
